Present

quiero, quieres, quiere, queremos, queréis, quieren

Preterite

quise, quisiste, quiso, quisimos, quisisteis, quisieron

quiero un huevo – I want an egg

quería ... – I’d like ...   (I am/have been wanting...)

→ First-person singular (yo) imperfect indicative form of querer.

→ Formal second-person singular (usted) imperfect indicative form of querer.

= Third-person singular (él, ella) imperfect indicative form of querer.

quisiera [reservar] una habitación – I’d like a room  (a of una is elided)

→ First-person singular (yo) imperfect subjunctive form of querer.

→ Formal second-person singular (usted) imperfect subjunctive form of querer.

=Third-person singular (él, ella) imperfect subjunctive form of querer.

Usually followed by a verb (infinitive form).

¿qué querías? – what did you want?
yo siempre había querido ser ingeniero – I had always wanted to be an engineer
querríamos un coche – We would like a car (conditional)...


When followed by another verb (always in infinitive), it’s modal:

queremos ver el museo – we want to see the museum

quise salir (preterite) – I wanted to go out (and that happened)

quería salir (imperfect) – I wanted to go out (and that might or might not have happened)

¿quiere cerrar la puerta? – would you mind closing the door?
